[1] Greetings.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi All:
We hope our U.S. members enjoyed the Independence Day holiday
weekend. Here in the NYC area it was a perfect weekend -excellent weather
and great fireworks display in NYC and surrounding towns. From our
building (15th floor) we get to see a marvelous display of fireworks from
10 towns and from NYC.
Today, one of our list members had a question on Mall of America. And we
added some more information on malls - history and some new ones.
Identity Theft is becoming a major issue. A consortium of finance firms
plan to share data with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) which they hope
to help combat ID theft. Of course, the next big issue will be how the
information will be used by the government.
Pam Danziger is working with the Conference Board in exploring the
possibility of conducting a research study on the global luxury market and
would like your input about what issues and topics about the international
luxury market are most important to your business.
Now, let's get to everything for the retailer.
Sincerely
George Matyjewicz, PhD

I sent the ETD to a friend in Minneapolis (my home, too) who is in
commercial real estate and a sport fanatic and he questioned the Yankee
Stadium information. Could you double check on that one? I guess it will
be helpful for us guys who want to win on the Millionaire.
Thanks,
Patty Sachs

Along that same line, the history of the mall is quite interesting. A
shopping center, shopping mall, or shopping plaza, is the modern adaptation
of the historical marketplace. The mall is a collection of independent
retail stores, services, and a parking area, which is conceived,
constructed, and maintained by a separate management firm as a unit. They
may also contain restaurants, banks, theaters, professional offices,
service stations etc.
The first shopping mall was the Country Club Plaza, founded by the J.C.
Nichols Company and opened near Kansas City, Mo., in 1922. The first
enclosed mall called Southdale opened in Edina, Minnesota (near
Minneapolis) in 1956. In the 1980s, giant megamalls were developed. The
West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada, opened in 1981 - with more than 800
stores and a hotel, amusement park, miniature-golf course, church, "water
park" for sunbathing and surfing, a zoo and a 438-foot-long lake.
In the next couple of years, here in NJ we will have Xanadu, complete with
the largest theater in the U.S., including a helipad to bring in special
guests for premiers. Xanadu is not that technical project started in the
1960's. Rather it is a new concept in retailing and living. They have a
couple of them worldwide. The one in Madrid "is a bold, new concept that
combines Europes largest indoor snow sports facility, compelling
entertainment and top international retail offerings under one roof. Its
unique mix of venues will engage consumers imaginations and create
exceptional experiences, and make Madrid Xanadú a dominant consumer
destination."
"As the largest and most modern retail development in the Iberian
Peninsula, Madrid Xanadú incorporates unique architecture and eye-catching
design into its offering of the best mix of shopping, dining and leisure.
The destinations racetrack layout offers shoppers an easy and
customer-friendly flow to experience 220 merchants, including 20
anchor/major stores and 30 casual restaurants. Geared toward family
entertainment, visitors to Madrid Xanadú can enjoy the indoor snow sports
facility, a 15-screen cinema, indoor go-carts, high-tech bowling and much
more."

[3] Finance Firms To Share Data on ID Theft

A financial-services industry consortium is expected to announce today that
it will begin sharing information about identity-theft cases with the
Federal Trade Commission, for use by law-enforcement officials nationwide.
The Identity Theft Assistance Center, a not-for-profit group whose members
range from Citigroup Inc. to Ford Motor Co.'s Ford Motor Credit Co.,
compiles case information while assisting customers of its member companies
who have been victims of fraud.
It plans to begin shipping details about its cases to the FTC, which also
fields consumer complaints about identity theft. The FTC's database is
available to local, state and federal law-enforcement officials.
The financial-services industry has been under attack for failing to do
enough to safeguard confidential account information. The new initiative
doesn't address that problem, but aims to help law-enforcement officials
chase down fraudsters.
Many card issuers already share data one-on-one with law enforcement. Anne
Wallace, executive director of the consortium, said the new initiative
would be the first time card issuers will turn over large pools of data to
the FTC.
"We believe enormously in the value of making every single complaint we get
available to law enforcement nationwide," said Lois Greisman, the FTC
official who manages its identity-theft program. Cases already verified by
banks, she said, constitute "very rich information.
