  [1] Greetings.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi All:

As a carry over from E-Tailer's Digest issue 913, re: Online TV
advertising, today we have some specifics on organizations using streaming
videos very effectively. We are doing some pro-bono work for a
not-for-profit who would like to use this new form of advertising. what
do you think? Is it effective? Are you using it?

List member Patty Sachs has some good advise on "phishing" which we all
should heed.

List member Amy Cole has provided us with information on a new report her
company has developed on global logistics and freight forwarding. For
those of us involved in global sales, it may be something to consider.

Now, let's get to everything for the retailer.

Sincerely

  [2] New Web era?
----------------------------------------------------------------
Years (5-7) ago, when the Web was new, we all had to count on each other
for information. There weren't many books or knowledge bases to learn
from. We had to rely on discussion lists where people of like interests
came together to discuss common problems, like E-Tailer's Digest.

I think we may be entering a new arena again now, where we will need help
from others. I know I will be looking for help real soon.

As broadband becomes more the norm, streaming (screaming?) video becomes
more popular. In fact, the WSJ had an article about how TV commercials
will soon be coming to the Web (Heaven help us).

Is anybody ready to do videos online? We are working pro-bono for a
not-for-profit, and may be looking for videos. There are some great ones
available now, which are being used with viral marketing:

Years ago I had a retail client who set up a new store and wanted a Web
site (in the days of modems, not broadband). He wanted the site to tell an
adventure story, i.e., you travel through a jungle wearing a particular
outfit, come across an English gentleman wearing another unique outfit,
etc., etc. He wanted to end it with where to buy all the goods. It was a
great concept, but way before it's time. Today, with broadband, that
concept would work well.

I mentioned how the GAP Stores (the other GAP ;-)) has one that you don't
even know it is theirs. I believe they are testing viral marketing and
will do something with their site. The site is at www.watchmechange.com
and the article was in the August 10, 2005 edition of WSJ.

The not-for-profit I am working with is a Jewish outreach program called
Partners In Torah, and their site needs major overhauling
http://partnersintorah.org In researching, I found some neat sites which
tell a story. One sells Kosher foods throughout the U.S., and has a cute
"commercial." The problem is when you send it to somebody to view (like I
am now doing), it doesn't allow you to get to the main site (poor planning
on their part). That link is http://www.kosher.com/cartoon.html. (turn
sound on and look at the concept, not the product or message).

My favorite was from a company selling a book, and their video was not only
very cute, but it had a link to the book. In fact, when I sent it to
somebody to review (the site), she sent a note asking why she would want to
buy that book. So, the ad does work. That site
is http://passovergreeting.com/

So, who is doing these kind of animations?

George

When Something Looks Phishy...

The ones I get most often are from PayPal and EBay. Both have assured me
that no mail ever goes to a member without the official name in the
heading. So if I ever get a message that reads "Dear Member" that asks for
update information, no matter how legitimate it looks (and some of them are
really authentic looking) I delete it.

That's my way of not getting hooked in.

Excellent advice Patty. Everybody should follow that rule. I use Eudora
for e-mail, and if I clink on a link, it tells me if the underlying link
does not agree with what is shown. Of course the phishermen (or
phisherwomen) are also smart, and merely say "click here." Don't do it.

[4] Who's Who in Global Logistics and Freight Forwarding 2005
----------------------------------------------------------------
For those doing global business, you may want to consider...

"Who's Who in Global Logistics and Freight Forwarding 2005: An Analysis of
Leading Global Logistics and Freight Forwarders" is a financial and
operational benchmarking report. The aim of the research is to provide a
detailed competitor tracking guide of the operational capabilities and
performances of global freight forwarders and logistics providers. The
report provides a valuable source of operational data on your key industry
partners and can also be used as a comprehensive end-user reference tool
for logistics and shipping departments.

Despite booming volumes, particularly from Asia Pacific, global logistics
service providers face a challenging time. Beset by rising fuel costs,
capacity constraints, legislative restrictions, shortages of skilled staff,
fiercely competitive operators and demanding customers, margins are being
squeezed to the limit. Service integration continues to feature high among
the strategies of the logistics and freight forwarding industry.

Use the report to identify:

- The changing patterns of global trade lanes - how freight movements
between the leading industrial countries are expanding and contracting

- Which companies are expanding freight forwarding revenues most quickly,
on a region by region basis?

- Comparisons in net revenue margins and how these have changed for
individual forwarders over the last five years

- How Kuehne & Nagel increased gross air freight revenues by 24.3%, though
net revenue margins declined?

- How the leading forwarders are developing their IT strategies to meet the
challenges posed by integration and globalization

- Which companies reacted differently to changing market conditions by
growing / cutting back on employee numbers and / or branch networks?

Logistics service providers and freight forwarders can research trends in
global trade movements between emerging countries such as India, China and
the Russian Federation. The report provides an analysis of export levels
between 13 leading industrial nations/regions, including the G8 countries.
The full list of countries included are: Canada; China; France; Germany;
Hong Kong; India; Italy; Japan; Korea; Russia; Singapore; UK and the US.

The report comes with a detailed Excel database for you to analyze and
manipulate the data for use in internal presentations and reports. The
database ranks and benchmarks your competitors and service providers, and
allows you to analyze their activities, operations and performance and run
your own internal analysis of the leading players in the Global freight
forwarding market.

Examples of the analysis and information included in the report include:

- Growth and decline in revenues by region
- Benchmark gross profits and margins
- Rankings by freight forwarding activity
- Operational comparisons by employees and branch networks
- Five year trend analysis in operating performances
- Compare IT systems and investment strategies
