[1] Greetings.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi All:
This week I was shopping online, placed an order at one small
retailer for $238.32, went to check out and learned they only took
Mastercard or Visa. Since I only use American Express, I abandoned
my cart. I still don't understand what is wrong with companies. So
Amex costs a few cents more, so what? It's better than losing the
sale. And why not tell folks upfront what you accept? This is not
the first time that has happened to me.
We have more on Plagiarism and the new UPS model that is listed in
"The World is Flat."
If you are looking for new POS and retail backend software, you may
want to down the free report offered by RIS News. It tells why
retailers are moving towards Linux. I've been leery of going in that
direction, mainly because of the lack of commercially-available
software. BTW, the new Apple G5 is experiencing the same
issue. They now use Intel, and software for their older machines
does not work on these new ones.
Now, let's get to everything for the retailer.
Sincerely

[2] The World is Flat - UPS
----------------------------------------------------------------
I was intrigued by what UPS has to offer companies - they're not just
a package delivery company. So, we will be visiting the UPS
facilities in Louisville, KY USA with a client of ours. This client
is an apparel importer/distributor, and has three warehouses on the
East Coast. They want to penetrate the Western US, and UPS may offer
a solution.
I did know about UPS, and visited their facilities in Louisville 4-5
years ago, when I was Chief E-Commerce Officer for a Chinese giftware
manufacturer trying to grow the business in the U.S. We didn't want
to set up a warehouse, and knew we couldn't ship by the carload as we
did with the majors. So we looked to outsource. UPS offered an
excellent solution, which worked for a couple of years, until we
opened a warehouse in NJ (which I opposed). They offered good and
speedy service at reasonable costs.
More recently, another client tried them for global distribution, and
it failed. They manufacture in Switzerland and Austria and have a
warehouse in the U.S. The US division decided to use UPS to bring
goods in, ship to accounts throughout North America and maintain the
warehouse. UPS had some issues, but I really believe most of the
issues were caused by the client.
We should be going there within the next month or so, and I'll keep you posted.

[3] Plagiarism

I've had many things that I have written on Direct Marketing and Mail
Order taken from our site or newsletter and used by others without
giving credit.
However, most times they change the title of the article and add a
new paragraph or two. I have not done anything to date, and I don't
really know if going after people will be worth the effort. If
someone took my whole book or report that we sell and copied it, then
maybe I could prove some kind of financial loss, and have a possible
case for a court.
If you decide to do something, please keep reporting on what you do
and results.
By the way, the new directory of Mail Order Catalogs and the annual
ranking of the top 150 catalogs are now available in the NMOA
bookstore. http://www.nmoa.org/catalog

The one thing you have to be careful about, George, is that last
paragraph of yours. I have a friend who posted, on his web site, a
lengthy analysis of how someone plagiarized him. He named the guy,
and then said something such as, "So, I wouldn't buy a <service> from
this guy and neither should you." The plagiarist sued for libel.

[4] Why Leading Retailers are Moving to Linux
----------------------------------------------------------------
Competition is the watchword in retail. With profit margins thinned
by web and mega retailers, you have to leverage technology to its
fullest to survive and thrive. To compete, many retailers are
turning to Linux technology to cut costs and grow customer loyalty.
Download The Perfect Storm: Advances in technology, combined with
pressure to cut costs are influencing industry-leading retailers to
switch to Linux, a white paper sponsored by Novell, that enables you
understand the challenges, solutions, and best practices to help
sharpen your competitive edge.

Novell's Linux Solutions for Retail extends from POS to In-Store
Servers to Headquarter Servers with benefits reaching from
scalability across platforms, mainframe stability, and certified
